Big Pond

Abd Kader Tamam

What does one do with rejected oil-based printing ink?
Abd. Kader had an idea. He used it for his art (1996-2009).
He experimented and painted with these inks, onto plywood
and donated all the five pieces to his company, a befitting
gesture to mark his long years of service as a Senior Officer
of the Percetakan Keselamatan Nasional, Kuala Lumpur..

In 1978, he completed a Bachelors Degree in Art and Design
(Graphics) from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam and
later obtained a Diploma in Printing Technology from Watford
College of Printing and Packaging, England.

Prior to his retirement, he started to paint using acrylic on canvas.
He re-kindled his interest in art and searched for inspiration. One
day, he chanced upon a colony of ‘anai-anai’ (termites) and noticed
their formation, flow and energy. He used these as motifs in his
abstract paintings and gave a riot of colours to it. By doing so, he
wants to show the interaction between colours, bringing rhythm and
life to his painting.
