Chong Hip Seng

Chong Hip Seng was trained as a lithograph printmaker under the 
tutelage of Sandoz in Switzerland. After a long absence from
Prinmaking, Hip Seng is making a comeback, this time still using
the planographic process, but this time he use the ability of the
electrostatic photocopier machine. With the understanding of
the capability and restriction of a copier machine, he started to 
expriment with multiplying his sketch. After a while he found
it to be just producing facsimilies of his drawing or sketches.
He later put his stack of drawing multiples aside. Consistent
with his works in arcylic, he is fond of creating layers with
the printed page of the newspaper or telephone directory
as his painting background. To achieve the same effect in his
work, Hip Seng runs his prints for several passes thru the
copier machine. He equates this process to multiple plate printing.

While producing this new series, Hip Seng is unconcerned to which
category his work will fall into. It does not matter to him if the
viewers want to call them drawing or prints. What concerns him 
is the final effect he achieves using this particular process,
even if he only produces one of a kind unique art piece.

The use of the copying machine by artists to produce art is
not new. In 1977 Judith McWillie wrote an article on the 
exploration of this media. Among artists mentioned in her
writing was Linton Godown of Tennessee, USA. Godown
has been making electrostatics monoprints in his studio since
1969. David Hockney is another artist who has worked in
his medium.
