THE FIRST IMPRESSIONS – GROUP EXHIBITION AT JETH ART GALLERY, KL

Surprisingly the weather was cool last Saturday, as I headed for JETH Art Gallery in Selangor Complex, near to Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur. As it was my FIRST time visiting this relatively new gallery, I arrived much earlier than the official exhibition opening time and was greeted by Dr Y S Yeoh, art director and Mr Hiew Yee Choy, the founder and director of JETH Art Gallery.

I was privileged to have a FIRST look at the artworks by the four featured artists – (from left) Aizat Amir, Ng Kok Leong, Dr. Yeoh, Ng Hon Loong and Lee Han Huei,  before the guests arrived, guided by Dr Yeoh.

“FIRST IMPRESSIONS, as known, is the event when one person FIRST encounters another person and forms a mental image of that person. Impression accuracy varies depending on the observer and the target being observed. The FIRST impressions individuals give to others could greatly influence how they are treated and viewed in many contexts of everyday life. However, a picture is worth a thousand words, and so each “picture” we present in “The FIRST IMPRESSIONS” today says much about the participating artists from their works, what we are appreciating..”

THE OPENING

In her welcoming opening speech, Dr Yeoh introduced each artist and spoke of their work their concept and inspiration.

Mr Hiew , declaring the exhibition open!

THE FEATURED ARTISTS:

NG HON LOONG

OCT SERIES  #2,5,7 & 10_ WORK FOR PEACE

These artworks were done in pastel, acrylic and newspaper collage during a time of unrest in the country, circa 1987. Using surrealism and symbolism, his artwork is filled with optimism, as he believes that Peace and Love will lead to Harmony.

Dr Yeoh also read out a poem written by Ng’s friend that echoes his sentiments.
Ng Hon Loong was given a scholarship to study at Malaysia Institute of Art in 1985 and 3 years later left for France to further his art training.  He also travelled around France and parts of Europe but later decided to return to Malaysia and concentrate on his art and is currently active in art education too.

AIZAT AMIR

IMAGINE (left) and BEAUTY AND THE STAR (right)

Further on using symbolism is Aizat Amir and his famous celebrites. These were impressionable people during their time. Aizat casts them in this series he calls “Tribute to Legends”.

SUZLEE IBRAHIM

Aizat’s lecturer at ASWARA (Academy of Arts, Culture and National Heritage) where Aizat obtained his Diploma of Fine Arts in 2013, Suzlee Ibrahim who is also a respected artist, dropped by to offer support and was roped in to say a few words about this young up-coming artist. After 3 years of hiatus, Aizat will be back at ASWARA  for his postgraduate studies this year.

LEE HAN HUEI

THE WAY OF LOTUS #1 & 2
Born in Penang in 1967, he graduated from Central Academy of Art in 1991 and since then he has been actively participating in local exhibitions and exhibitions in China.  Running a garden landscaping business, he is constantly surrounded by nature and has an affinity with flowers. They are constantly the centre of his artwork. He skilfully balances strong colours and bold strokes with the delicate subject matter and often infuses Eastern elements into his Western-style painting.

NG KOK LEONG

OLD TEA HOUSE #2

CHARCOAL FACTORY #1
Ng Kok Leong’s artistic career takes a different route. Born in Kuala Kangsar in 1973, he graduated from One Academy (1994) and pursued a degree at Beijing Film Academy (2001), and worked as Assistant Film Director and Art Director at an advertising company in Beijing.  After returning home in 2015 he has been actively participating in  art exhibitions.

Over time Ng Kok Leong  has developed a distinct recognisable style which the photos above do not do justice to his style. One needs to see it up-close how he uses the vibrancy of lines and small circles and layers of colour to give an intensity and energy to his subject matter.

So do visit this group exhibition and view the varied styles of each artist but as a whole the artworks show their total commitment to their art forms.
